Bendigo Guineas for Amadeus

Mar 08, 2016

The Listed Bendigo Guineas is the target for promising three-year-old Amadeus who did such a great job rising in class, distance and weight at Cranbourne on Friday night.

Sent out favourite on the back of an impressive maiden victory at Pakenham four week's previously, Amadeus did a bit of work early from a wide gate to settle on pace - the track proving a hard hunting ground for back markers.

"He just had to be used up a bit early to get across but you had to be up there on this track," Michael Kent said.

Taking the lead early in the straight, Amadeus proved a class above his rivals dashing to a soft 1 1/4 length victory.

"It was nice to see him do that," Kent said. "He had a bit of weight for a three-year-old... he did a good job."

Jockey Craig Williams agreed.

"He had to be under a bit more pressure this time and I like the way he delivered."

"He can still carry his head a bit high and he really only got to relax for about a furlong. He is doing a bit wrong but still winning and you have to love that."

"He is a really nice horse," he continued, "and he will get smarter."

Whilst Amadeus' two wins to date have come over 1000m and 1200m, Kent's gut feeling is that the son of Amadeus Wolf is a miler, but one with pace - "he has always shown speed at home."

The win was celebrated by Amadeus' very happy owner/breeder Joan Walker who has probably been breeding racehorses for longer than anyone else in Victoria!

Best known, with her mother, as the owner and breeder of the popular stayer Reckless, Joan has been with the stable for some time - not always enjoying the best of luck.

"We've had horses who've been slow, others who have gone amiss. So it is lovely to have a nice horse again."

Putting plenty of research into her breeding plans, Joan always inspects potential mates for her mares and was taken with Amadeus Wolf the second she saw him - "he just had oomph," she said.

Amadeus is the third foal for the Dangerous mare Jaywalk whose fourth dam is Impulsive - the stakes winning dam of Reckless.
