Written - Winner On Every City Track
Feb 06, 2016
What a grand mare Written has been for her owners, in just 24 starts winning six races and amassing over $310,000 in stakes.
And how tough was she on Saturday?! Sitting wide from an outside gate and showing great heart over the final stages, she dug deep to wear down the leaders - in doing so achieving the not so easy feat of having won at every Melbourne metropolitan track.
Twice successful at Sandown in the autumn of 2014 and then at Flemington later that year, Written was in winning form at Moonee Valley last summer and she adds a Caulfield victory to her impressive resume.
Not surprisingly she is a real favourite for jockey Jackie Beriman who has won five races on the chestnut - "she has been a great horse for my career," she said.
Not perturbed about sitting wide on Written, Beriman agreed with Michael Kent's assessment that it was more important just to let the mare get into her right rhythm than hunt her up to lead.
"That's the key to her," Beriman said - "you can't fight her, you just have to let her be happy and she was the whole way today, she settled perfectly."
"She travelled into the race beautifully and she was too strong at the finish."
Kent was delighted, saying that he had been confident of a bold showing with Written having "come on well" since her first up run - "she worked sharply on Tuesday," he said.
And he was very happy with Beriman's tactics - "it may not have been a pretty ride but that is the way to ride her, it is important just to let her travel on the bridle."
"I would love to get a black type win for her," he continued, noting that there is a race coming up in Tasmania and also further Vobis Gold options for her in Melbourne.
Raced by Geoff Grimish, Craig & Keline Carmody and Manny Spinola, Written was a $45,000 purchase for Carmody, her original trainer and long time friend of Michael Kent.
A daughter of in-form stallion Written Tycoon, she is a half-sister to fellow city winners Golden Oldies and Arena Rock from the family of German stars Luso and Warrsan. Further back this is also the family of influential stallion Danzig.
