Iron Will To Win

Mar 26, 2015

Having run well without the best of luck at his first two starts, Iron Spider was a deserved winner at the new Park at Tynong on Thursday.

Slowly away at his Ballarat debut in mid February, the promising three-year-old was doing his best work late whilst second up he struck early interference - ending up too far back in a slowly run race in which it was hard to make ground.

However things went more to plan for Iron Spider at his third go with a bit of pace on in the 3Y0 Maiden Plate.

Appreciating racing against his own age group for the first time, Iron Spider again got back in running but was always travelling well for Noel Callow who hooked him out widest into the straight.

Quickly making up ground, Iron Spider joined the leaders at the 200m to go and by the 100m and he was off and running - racing clear to an impressive three length victory.

A $41,000 weanling purchase by Peter Ford, Iron Spider is by Group One sprinter/miler Hard Spun and he is the second foal produced by the placed Red Ransom mare Boracay.

Served last spring by Helmet having produced a colt by that same stallion in September Boracay is a daughter of the three times Group winner Beachside, dam of the Group One winner Cannsea and half-sister to the Group One winners Librici and Procol Harum.

From a family of horses who improve with maturity, Iron Spider has always been well regarded by the stable with Michael Kent describing him as "a tall scopey horse who is just taking a bit of time to find his feet."

"He has a great pedigree and we are hopeful that he can progress to city class three-year-old races."

Congratulations to Iron Spider's owners Brent & Amanda Francis, Dr Tony Kostos, Michael Hildebrand, John  Hildebrand, Matthew Hildebrand, Jonathan Hildebrand, John O'Brien, Shane Slade, Dr Norman Sonenberg, Michael Kostos, Joseph Shiels, Ivan Zaknich, John Coen, Christopher Coen, James Strauss and Carolyn Hildebrand.
