Malabar Man's Maiden
Jan 13, 2014
Having not raced since finishing unplaced in the 2012 VRC Derby behind Fiveandahalfstar, it was going to be a tough task for Malabar Man to win first up over a mile - but that is just what he did at Werribee on Sunday.
Drifting back to second last, the lightly raced four-year-old made a run before the turn, looming up to take the lead before racing clear to win by a length with plenty in hand.
A horse who has always shown terrific potential - finishing second to Solemn (subsequent Gr.1 South Australian Derby winner Escado third) in the Listed Geelong Classic, Malabar Man was however still a maiden - his progress hindered by a severe tendon injury.
Congratulations to patient owners Philip Wooldridge, Anne Wooldridge, Michael Kent, Jenny O'Sullivan and Paul O'Sullivan who are looking forward to seeing Malabar Man make his way through the grades.
Bred by Emirates Park, Malabar Man - a son of Any Given Saturday(pictured) - is a half-brother to the UK Gr.2 winner Best Alibi out of the Sadler's Wells mare Chauncy Lane, half-sister to the Gr.1 Irish 2000 Guineas winner Fourstars Allstar.
