Backbone Ballarat Cup Bound

Oct 16, 2013

Backbone is a well named horse - for he has plenty of it!

"He is a good, tough horse,"  said Michael Kent after the five-year-old's determined victory on the 1000 Guineas card at Caulfield on Wednesday.

"There was no speed in the race so he had to get there early," he said, "but he just kept trying."

Jockey James McDonald echoed Kent's words - "it was a tough effort, he really stayed on."

Doing a great job under the steadier of 60kg, Backbone was having only his second run back from a spell.

Sound over 1500m at Moonee Valley when resuming, he appreciated the step up to 2000m on Wednesday and was travelling like the winner a fair way out.

A $NZ240,000 Ready To Run Sale graduate, Backbone is raced by Mark & Janine Casey, Douglas McLennan, Sean Duke, Jana Kadlckova, Tabitha & Mike Tauschek, Glen Barker, Sean Priestly and Dr Adam Gay.

A son of consistent stallion Mossman, Backbone is out of the Group winning At Talaq mare Fuss.

With several of his owners boasting connections to the Ballarat Turf Club, Backbone is being aimed towards that race and, Kent said, there are "a couple of options" along the way - either a race at Flemington during Cup Week or the Kyneton Cup.
