"A Special Win"

Jul 06, 2013

It was a privilege to win a race in the colours of much respected, now retired trainer Midge Didham - and with a nice horse too, Umatilla Girl most impressive breaking her maiden at Cranbourne on Thursday.

Having only her fourth start and her second at the mile, the daughter of Umatilla covered ground before looming up at the turn before hitting the lead with 50m to go and racing away by 1 1/4 lengths.

It was apt that Midge Didham's son-in-law Brad Rawiller be the winning jockey and he was pleased to salute in the pale blue, red and gold colours.

"It was a special win," he said, adding that he thinks Umatilla Girl is a horse o the up.

A home-bred for Michael Hornsby who races the three-year-old with John Humphreys, Umatilla Girl is the final foal produced by the Maroof mare So Aloof, a daughter of the New Zealand stakes placed mare Mercury Vapour from the family of Western Australian Derby and Oaks winner Old Money.
