Black Type boys!
Apr 26, 2013
The stable looks forward to the spring and beyond with several nice staying types in good form of late - two of whom in particular look great prospects for the future.
Philippi - runaway winner of the Gr.2 Tulloch Stakes - was a gallant second in the Gr.1 Australian Derby at his next outing, game in defeat but just no match for a brilliant It's A Dundeel.
Losing no fans with the run, Philippi impressed jockey Luke Nolen - "it was his first go at the distance," he said, "and he did a good job. He may have run into a champion."
Lightly raced maiden McNulty is another horse who should improve as he matures - the son of Refuse To Bend finishing off gamely in the Listed St Leger Stakes at Flemington on Anzac Day.
Whilst beaten three lengths, he too ran into a smart one in Hippopus and whilst we would rather have won we were happy to see our form lines hold up - that horse running a three length second to Philippi in the Tulloch.
Michael Kent is confident that McNulty will be a better horse next time in - "he has always appealed to me as a nice sort of stayer," he said, "but he's been a bit slow picking up on what to do - he just needs racing."
Whilst Philippi is in the paddock in preparation for a spring campaign, McNulty may now head to Adelaide to contest Saturday week's South Australian Derby.
