Vittoria sets scene for Sydney Cup

Apr 07, 2013

They don't come much tougher than gutsy in-form mare Vittoria who, at Moonee Valley on Saturday recorded her third victory from as many starts this campaign.

A mare who has always shown promise - running third in last year's Queensland Oaks at Eagle Farm - Vittoria has matured at four and now looks set for a crack at the Sydney Cup.

Always having that Group One two miler in mind for Vittoria, Michael Kent enjoyed a particularly good Saturday - cheering on the mare from Sydney where he saddled up runaway Tulloch Stakes winner Philippi.

Despite drawing the outside gate in the 2500m Friends Of Epworth Handicap Handicap, Vittoria was able to get to the lead - settling nicely for Jackie Beriman who is now two for two on the mare.

The pair did not have it their own way in front however, Vittoria pressured from the 600m with a bunch of horses coming at her in the run home.

However she just kept digging along the rails, prompting Berriman to declare her "a superstar!"

Congratulations to owners Short Black Racing, Russell Rogers, Bernard Towson, Robyn Rogers and Develop & Invest Racing who are hoping to again in the winner's circle at Randwick on April 27.
