Longshot Debut Winner
Jun 24, 2018
It is not every day that one of our first starters is sent out at such big odds as was Miss Pandanus at Geelong on Friday - the three-year-old's starting price a massive 60-1!
But she did not race like a longshot, the daughter of Street Boss always travelling well having been given time to find her feet from a wide gate.
Still a fair way off them approaching the turn, Miss Pandanus did however look to have plenty to offer, cruising wide around the turn and charging home once getting into the best gong out wide.
"We have had a nice enough opinion of her," said Beau Mertens, "but we thought she'd need further."
"At about the 600m rolling down the hill she made up a bit of ground really quickly and I thought she might be the winner here - but I didn't want to get there too soon so I nursed and nursed her."
"And she hit the line really well."
It was a pleasant surprise for her owners - long time friends Karin McNab and Lynette Humble - who would've been happy if the plan "to giver her a nice day out and a good first day at the races experience" had come to fruition.
But a win is a great bonus!
Miss Pandanus is from a family the stable knows well, her dam Mighty Minx also producing the city winners Countcool and Cameo Minx. This is also the family of big race winners Episode and First Seal.
