Minx Leads Throughout

Jan 27, 2018

There were two roars of appreciation for the all the way victory recorded by Thieving Minx at Mornington on Friday - firstly from her fans on course and secondly from her proud owner and breeder Karin MacNab who was surrounded by friends when hosting a race day party at the nearby Balnarring picnic meeting.

It is a much looked forward to annual event for Karin who has been a loyal stable client and it is always nice to win races for her - especially with Thieving Minx who was having just her second run back from an injury enforced spell.

Recovering nicely from a hind leg operation, Thieving Minx has come up all the stronger and looks to have plenty more to offer - especially when she learns to settle a bit more in her races!

"She has taken a lot of time," Mick Kent said.

"She is quite a tall, rangy mare and she just wants things over quickly - she wants to rush along in her races which is why we have been running her over the short trips when I think seven furlongs will probably be her best distance."

Confident that Thieving Minx will eventually measure up at metropolitan level, Kent was happy with the ride of Beau Mertens who quickly took the sparingly raced five-year-old to the lead.

"We hoped to be sitting second but Beau quickly summed it up that they were going to go slow and he just let her stride."

"She won quite well in the end I thought."

Mertens, who kicked home a winning double at the meeting, was happy by the performance with Thieving Minx having her rivals off the bit turning despite not settling perfectly.

"She doesn't really know how to relax yet," he said. "I didn't want to lead but she jumped pretty quickly and put herself there."

"She is a nice mare who has still got a lot to learn."

The win by Thieving Minx was part of a big day for Karin whose rescue horse Captain Material bolted in at Balnarring... more enthusiastic cheering ensuing!

A daughter of Redoute's Choice's Zeditave Stakes winner Time Thief, Thieving Minx - known by her friends as "Bonnie" - is out of the stable's multiple city winning Viscount mare Cameo Minx who Karin also raced.

A full sister to dual city winner Countcool (also trained by Kent), Cameo Minx hails from the family of Group One winners Episode and First Seal. Thieving Minx boasts an interesting pedigree with duplications of the great influences Bletchingly, Better Boy, Nijinsky II and Sir Ivor as well as a 7 X 7 cross of the wonderful mare Oceana.
