Michael Jnr Cheers Home A Carnival Winner
Nov 12, 2017
Having so enjoyed his time at William Haggas' Somerville Lodge stables at Newmarket, Michael Kent Jnr was delighted to receive this phone call a few months ago...
"Can you look after our horse Fastnet Tempest over the Melbourne spring?"
"I was thrilled with the opportunity," Michael said, happy to be reacquainted with a horse who he had ridden every day during his UK stint.
Fastnet Tempest raced three times over his eight weeks under Michael's eye and he declare the five-year-old's victory at Flemington on Saturday as "fantastic, a relief!"
"It has been a great training performance by William, his wife Maureen and the whole team at Somerville Lodge," he said, happy to see the son of Fastnet Rock fight the finish out so strongly having had to make his run a little early.
"He is a horse probably best ridden for one last run," he said. "But he got the job done, he goes for a spell now - my job is done!"
Also happy was Terry Henderson, manager of OTI Racing who races Fastnet Tempest - "young Michael did a terrific job bringing this horse through to this win," he said.
Whilst Fastnet Tempest will do his future racing from Lindsay Park, Michael is bound to keep a close eye on a horse who has given him a great spring carnival memory.
