Melbourne Cup Ride For Beau

Nov 05, 2017

Whilst we don't have a runner in Tuesday's Melbourne Cup, there is still a buzz at the stables with Beau Mertens gaining a last minute ride on Saturday's tough Hotham Handicap winner Cismontane.

The last horse into the field, the Gai Waterhouse trained five-year-old is a long shot but has the breeding being a son of High Chaparral out of a half-sister to the Wellington and New Zealand Cup winner Smiling Like and the tough stayer Mr Eurostar who was a gutsy fourth in Subzero's Melbourne Cup.

"Once we decided not to run Abbey Marie it looked like he would be missing out," said Mick Kent, "but it is a great testament to his ability and his popularity that he has been able to gain a ride from a major stable whilst still an apprentice."
