A Spirited Win

The stable took two horses to Pakenham on Thursday, Princeton Spirit and Swiss Moments contesting the last two races - and both came home winners, providing us with a lovely running double.

Too strong on pace from the outside gate at his Geelong debut late last month, Princeton Spirit was up in class and distance but had created such a good impression at his first start that he was sent out equal favourite.

Doing a bit of work just off the pace, Princeton Spirit nevertheless travelled well throughout and when asked for an effort by our apprentice Stephanie Thornton he was strong to the line - putting his nose out just where it counted.

"He really quickened nicely in the straight," Thornton reported, adding that she was happier to sit wide than to push the horse forward.

"Early days he was quite an aggressive horse in his trials and the aim with him as been to get him to settle. I didn't want to be caught three deep but I also didn't want to push the button to sit outside the leader as I know he can get quite strong."

"I was really happy with how he relaxed today."

"I really like the horse, it was always going to be a test for him stepping up in grade, he has still got a lot to learn so for him to come out and do that at only his second start, he was quite impressive."

Managing owner Julius Sandhu, who also works at the stable, was delighted to make it two from two with the New Zealand bred son of Blue Diamond Stakes winner Nadeem.

"We had a few owners (golf friends) here who were really screaming, we are very excited!" he enthused.

"We were quietly confident," he added. "He drew a much better barrier than at his first start which gave us options we how we could race him. There looked to be a bit of an on-pace pattern so I asked Stephanie to be positive and give him every chance."

"I was a bit worried when he was three wide but she kept him nice and calm."

"He had pulled up really well from his first start, he gives us every indication that he is enjoying his racing."

Boasting a fascinating pedigree, Princeton Spirit is bred on a 3 X 3 cross of his own third dam Country Flower, also third dam of Nadeem. He can boast amongst his relations the feature race winners Candide, Marju Snip and Billion Win.
