2 year old Bay Colt
Sire: Kuroshio Dam: Witchy
*** UPDATE - close relative AJUDA wins impressively at Sandown on Feb 8! ***
*** KUROSHIO's first crop of impressive yearlings average over $70,000 at the Melbourne Premier ***
This strong bay colt was foaled on September 9, 2015. He hails from the debut crop of Kuroshio, a Darley bred and raced stallion who won three of his 11 starts; at two taking out the Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (one of the first juvenile races of the season) and the Gr.3 Blue Diamond Prelude, defeating Dissident.
At three he took on the older horses at weight-for-age level, showing his usual speed to win the Gr.3 McEwen Stakes, leading throughout... proving 1 3/4 lengths too good for Moment Of Change.
Retired to stud in 2014, Kuroshio has proven popular with breeders, serving 206 mares in his first two years at Darley's Nagambie base.
Witchy's family is one of mainly sprinters so with Kuroshio it is speed on speed.
Neither big nor small, this colt is strong and well put together and is not only an excellent type but a colt with a terrific temperament.
This fellow is the product of a planned mating. Kuroshio's dam is line-bred to the legendary Secretariat whilst Witchy is line-bred to his half-brother Sir Gaylord... providing for a 6 X 7 X 7 X 7 cross of the influential Somethingroyal, one of the great modern day line-breeding subjects with around 500 stakes winners line-bred to her within five generations alone.
Kuroshio's dam also boasts a 5 X 6 cross of the champion race and broodmare Two Lea via her Kentucky Derby winning son Tim Tam and her other fine son On-And-On. Witchy meanwhile boasts an extra strain of the latter.
Witchy's half-sister Lady Lisbon has produced a very nice type with similar line-breeding (crosses of Somethingroyal and Two Lea)... Ajuda who was impressive easily breaking her maiden recently - then taking that form to town and winning in strong style at Sandown in early February.
Meanwhile Kuroshio and Peintre Celebre are bred on the same Northern Dancer/Alydar cross.
And it is worth noting how well the Exceed And Excel/Nureyev cross is faring with an excellent stakes winner strike rate of 6.6%.
Witchy has had four runners to date, three of whom have been winners including the talented Malinga who was unfortunately injured after winning his maiden by three lengths.
Witchy is a half-sister to six winners including the metropolitan winners Lady Lisbon and Potomac (both of whom are proving good producers) as well as the five times winner Tanjil who was fourth at Listed level.
Witchy's dam Southern Scene is out of the excellent producer Miss Golly, dam of 11 winners including the stakes placed Adelaide Magic Millions winner Sparky Miss whose five winners include the stakes winner Rancho Spark and the speedy stakes placed Dual Spark whose stakes winning daughter Sparks Fly was trained by Michael Kent.
